If you have a place you can dedicate to your photography, that's very good. If not, you can still use this technique, setting up and tearing down each time you need to photograph an item.
In the last few issues of the Chatter, this column has focused on gathering the basic gear for photography. There are just a few more pieces of gear that we're going to need before we begin photographing.
A clean background and foreground are far more important than many people believe. If you have any doubt, look at photos of products you see in magazines or items you see on television. Remember the amount of money these companies have spent to produce these images. Also remember that in a lot of cases, these companies are in direct competition with you as an eBay seller.
You can minimize those reflections very easily and without too much expense. Aside from trying to photograph in an area where there is little to be reflected, you can use what's known as a polarizing filter. I won't tell you how it works -- it's a trigonometric-Pythagorean-serendipitous kind of thing. But I'll tell you how to use it.
This change will give you the opportunity for even more variations. If you use bulbs of different wattage on the two different sides, for instance, you can get shadows similar to the soft shadows you saw using the reflector. For a truly shadow-free effect, you will want to use the same size light on either side and place your subject in the middle between the two. Be sure to have your light sources an equal distance from the subject.
